CITY GARDEN - AMSTERDAM

Tuinontwerp, Amsterdam, stadstuin, villatuin

For this city garden in Amsterdam, the new extension at the rear of the monumental 1930s built villa formed the starting point for the garden design. The extension, designed with respect for existing architecture, actually consists of two interlocking extensions  with an offset in the roof lines. This offset formed the basis for the new layout of the garden, in order to solve the existing height difference of more than 1meter between ground floor and “level ground”.

This design solution results in a dynamic garden consisting of two intimate “outdoor rooms” spread over three levels. Namely: a veranda terrace next to the house, a dining terrace situated lower and a lounge terrace situated at the lowest part, with ponds and gargoyles. The different levels are connected using a large wooden steps. The tree and hedge structure increases the intimacy of the outdoor rooms and provides privacy. The entrance to the jetty has been ingeniously solved with a retaining wall placed at the end of the dining terrace in the same masonry as the house. Two flights of stairs complete the garden leading to the lower jetty and access to the water.
